Produced by Brugal & Co., one of the historic names of Dominican rum, founded in 1888 by Andrés Brugal Montaner, Extra Viejo has been part of Brugal’s premium range since the 1970s. Made from molasses and matured in ex-American whisky/oak barrels, Extra Viejo is known for a comparatively dry, oak-driven style. Sources describe the blend as containing rums matured for roughly three to eight years, with an emphasis on the older components. The nose combines vanilla, ripe banana, toasted nuts, dried fruit, cocoa, caramel and warm spice. On the palate it develops notes of toffee, coffee, orange zest, cinnamon and pepper, leading to a persistent, warming finish. Wine Enthusiast historically rated Brugal Extra Viejo 90–95 points, highlighting oak, dried fruit, toasted nuts, honeyed notes and its rich toasted finish.
