A remarkable survivor from one of the great post-war Port vintages. Produced by the historic house of Fonseca, founded in 1815, this 1948 Vintage Port represents an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire a bottle approaching eight decades of bottle maturation. The 1948 declaration produced some extraordinary Vintage Ports, and Fonseca’s release has developed a formidable reputation among collectors. Mature examples are prized for their combination of richness, elegance and extraordinary longevity. This bottle retains its distinctive original black “Fonseca’s Finest 1948 Vintage Port” label, together with the original capsule clearly embossed “FONSECA’S 1948 VINTAGE.” The photographs show an impressively high fill level for a bottle of this age. At full maturity, well-preserved examples of Fonseca 1948 can show extraordinary complexity: dried black fruits, fig, cherry, spice, chocolate, cedar and evolved tertiary notes, with the richness and structure for which Fonseca Vintage Port is renowned.
