Quinta do Vale Meão 2004 is an outstanding mature vintage of one of the Douro’s benchmark red wines, produced at the historic Quinta do Vale Meão estate in the Douro Superior. The estate traces its history to Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira — “Ferreirinha”, one of the defining figures in the history of the Douro. Quinta do Vale Meão subsequently passed through her descendants and developed into one of Portugal’s internationally recognized fine-wine estates. The 2004 is composed of 60% Touriga Nacional, 20% Touriga Franca, 15% Tinta Roriz and 5% Tinta Barroca, as confirmed by the original back label. The vintage achieved major international recognition, receiving 97/100 from Wine Spectator and being selected as #18 in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2006. Wine Enthusiast awarded the vintage 94/100, while Wine Advocate’s later retrospective also rated it 94/100. Wine Spectator characterized the wine as powerful and deeply colored, with layers of dark fruit, mocha and spice, substantial structure, fine tannins and a long finish.
