A limited-production Grande Reserva from the Douro, Grande Piano 2017 represents the top end of the Piano range from Carlos Alonso Douro Wine Company. Produced from 60% Touriga Nacional, 20% Touriga Franca and 20% Tinta Roriz, the grapes were carefully selected before fermentation in small batches. The wine subsequently matured for an impressive 24 months in new 500-litre French oak barrels, followed by further bottle ageing. Only 6,140 numbered bottles were produced. Deep and concentrated in style, the 2017 shows ripe black fruits accompanied by balsamic notes and tobacco from its extended French-oak maturation. It received 90 points from James Suckling, while Portuguese publication Grandes Escolhas rated it 17.5/20 and described a dense, full-bodied wine with plum, cherry, violet, dark chocolate and sweet-spice characteristics.
