Created as a deeply personal tribute by Fernando Guedes, Legado represents the transmission of knowledge, passion and heritage from one generation of the Sogrape family to the next. The project began with the 2008 vintage; 2017 marked the 10th vintage of Legado. The wine comes from just 8 hectares of extraordinary century-old, pre-phylloxera vineyards at Quinta do Caêdo, in Ervedosa do Douro. These historic mixed vineyards contain numerous ancestral Douro varieties and are harvested manually in several stages to capture optimum balance. The exceptionally hot and dry 2017 vintage produced a wine of remarkable concentration and aromatic complexity. Winemaker Luís Sottomayor describes a profile of ripe black fruits, balsamic and woodland notes, spices, truffle and beautifully integrated oak. On the palate it combines considerable volume with refined tannins, refreshing acidity and an exceptionally elegant, persistent finish. Production was extremely limited: only 2,538 bottles were produced, according to Sogrape’s technical sheet. The wine was bottled on 21 May 2020 and carries 14.5% ABV.

His passion for fine wine and spirits began with the great Ports and table wines of his home country and grew into a wider fascination with the craft, history and provenance behind every great bottle. When he isn’t tasting or sourcing, he can be found driving the back roads of Europe in search of small producers and the stories behind their labels.
