Where fine wine becomes contemporary art. Created to celebrate 25 years of Quanta Terra, ÍRIS 2019 is an extraordinary collaboration between the Douro producer and internationally acclaimed Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto, aka Vhils. Produced in an exceptionally limited edition of only 250 five-litre bottles, ÍRIS brings together the work of winemakers Celso Pereira and Jorge Alves with the unmistakable artistic language of Vhils. Each monumental 5L bottle was individually intervened and signed by Vhils, transforming the bottle itself into a collectible object in which wine, glass and contemporary art become a single work. This example is Bottle No. 191 of 250. The striking black bottle carries Vhils’ distinctive eye motif in white, while the reverse identifies the edition, 2019 vintage and 5,000 ml format and bears the artist’s signature and individual numbering. Inside the substantial bespoke presentation case are statements from winemaker Celso Pereira, Jorge Alves and Vhils explaining the philosophy behind ÍRIS—the relationship between territory, time, wine, glass and artistic expression. The lot is presented with its original presentation case, protective ÍRIS cloth sleeve and matching Certificate of Authenticity numbered 191/250. At five litres and with only 250 examples created, this is considerably more than a rare large-format Douro wine: it is a numbered Portuguese contemporary-art collectible containing one of the Douro’s most ambitious limited-edition wines. 5 liters.
