This Niepoort Colheita Port comes from the legendary 1900 harvest and was bottled in 1972, after approximately 72 years of maturation in cask — an exceptionally long period of oxidative ageing even by the standards of great Colheita Port. Produced by Niepoort, one of the historic Port houses of Vila Nova de Gaia, this bottle represents a remarkable intersection of history, patience and traditional Portuguese winemaking. More than seven decades in wood would have allowed the wine to develop extraordinary concentration and complexity before finally being bottled. The bottle itself is highly evocative of its period: the traditional dark glass, hand-stencilled “PORTO COLHEITA 1900” lettering and aged capsule give it the unmistakable appearance of an old cellar release.
