Monte Meão Casa das Máquinas 2021 is produced by F. Olazabal & Filhos at Quinta do Vale Meão, in the Douro Superior. The wine comes from a small 1.9-hectare vineyard planted in 1971 on schist soils, situated beside the estate’s old machinery house—the origin of the name Casa das Máquinas. The 2021 is composed of approximately 80% Touriga Franca and 20% Tinta Barroca. The grapes are traditionally foot-trodden in lagares, followed by maturation for 16 months in French oak, approximately 10% new barrels. It is a concentrated but elegant Douro red, showing ripe red and black fruits, plum, floral notes, liquorice, spice and mineral nuances, supported by fresh acidity and fine, structured tannins. The 2021 received 93 points from Robert Parker/Wine Advocate according to current merchant documentation.
